Calabria – it sounds like a fairy tale location: Narnia, Fantasia, Calabria… And what a world of wonder ‘The Toe of the Boot” of Italy is. As one of the oldest regions in the country, with Greek inhabitants from 800 BC, it’s steeped in history. Aside from the cultural draws, stunning coastlines abound with crystal waters and ruins can also be found underwater near the shore line. The interior is blessed with no fewer than three national parks – the most in any region in the country – offering all kinds of adrenalin-inducing sports and activities. The cherry on the top is the gastronomic delights (agriculture is still the main economy), of which I was lucky enough to sample many, much to my belt’s exasperation.
Imagine being able to see two seas from the snow-capped mountain you’re skiing down. Yes, you can ski in Calabria in winter! And with no part of the region more than 50km from the coast, Calabria makes for a very unusual ski destination, sandwiched in between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas.
If skiing isn’t for you there’s also skimobiling, quad biking, snow-shoeing, bobsleighing, or even taking a ‘taxi’ by piste basher.
If water is more your thing than the white stuff then there are some stunning locations for canyoning, rafting, etc. I went on a three hour rafting expedition with ‘Lao’ and can highly recommend their services and zest for life. The vistas were truly remarkable as we swam through canyons and danced under waterfalls in between paddling our way down river towards our lunch destination under ancient bridges, taking in fossils and caves carved out by thousands of years of running water.
For groups of guys or gals Calabria could also make for a great break, with activities such as ‘softair’ (similar to paintball), truffle hunting, bubble football, pasta making, etc on offer to compliment your beach escape or mountain retreat.
